Mmmm ... for me, a textbook is always a standard account of a particular subject, used in studying or practicing that subject. A good example in my field of psychology would be Kantowitz & Sorkin's "Human Factors: Understanding People-System Relationships" out of Wiley & Sons, ISBN 0-471-09594-X... a compedium of empirical findings of the limits of human performance.
