Windows Desktop Search, the local search component of the MSN Search =
Toolbar, uses the same indexing technology and the same indexing =
components (IFilter implementations). It indexes email which can = require
a user's logon credentials. That said, I would like it to share = the
index. What I do is I continue to use the index service for files = just
as I have for the past many years and use Windows Desktop Search = for
email.

I agree, the way indexing service is connected to search companion is=20
broken. It frequently ignores the indexing service even if it is =
enabled. It=20
seems not to use it if at the time of the search there are files =
pending=20
indexing.
You can reliably use the indexing service by bypassing "search =
companion"=20
altogether, directly accessing the indexing service. You can do this =
by=20
right-clicking on "My Computer", selecting "Manage", and then =
navigating to
Service and Applications
Indexing Service
System
Query the Catalog
This presents a form you can use to enter queries. This is actually =
very=20
powerful if you are willing to use the query language syntax. To learn =
about=20
this, don't bother clicking "Tips for searching" because the
"Query =
Syntax"=20
button it presents is broken. Instead choose Help, Help Topics, and =
then=20
open "Indexing Service" in the table of contents.
I don't understand why the new MSN desktop search does not use this =
facility=20
instead of implementing its own. The advantage of indexing service is =
that=20
since it runs as a service it does not require anyone to be logged on =
to do=20
indexing. Additionally, multiple users can share the same index.
