Your example is still not the query syntax even though it is understood =
if you pass it to index server. I think the query syntax is something =
like ($contents folder) AND ($contents builds) AND ({at}filename=3D*.txt).

The ! seems to be always needed here. On XP SP2. I just pressed Win+F
and entered the following under 'A word or phrase in the file':

  folder & builds & {at}filename=3D*.txt

The search ground away and had displayed nothing in 20 seconds, so I
clicked Stop. I then inserted '!' at the start of the search and got a
list of 50 items in under a second.

I then deleted the '!' and clicked Search. Within a second it
  announced:
Search is complete. There are no results to display.

Yes - I can see that. Also, if I created a file one minute ago, the
"search with indexing" might not find it (although in practice I have
noticed the CI is amazingly fast at noticing changed files -
  presumably it requests notifications).

Some serious work on the GUI (starting with shooting the dog) is
needed! The ultra-friendly gumph that is shown under 'Change
preferences' is just TOO confusing! Example: I see
      Without Indexing Service
meaning that I am USING the indexing service, and if I were to click
the stupid message it would stop using it.
