AA> Millenium - by John Varley

 BK> Yep.

AA> Has anyone read any of these? I'm currently re-reading
AA> Millenium; I first bought this book when I was about 14.
AA> The movie came out in the early nineties or late eighties.
AA> And of course, the movie wasn't as good as the book, as is
 AA> usually the case. :)

BK> I rented the movie just to see if it was the same book. It was,
BK> but, like you said, not as good. Also, as you said, as usual.

BK> OTOH, aside from the cheap special effects, I was surprised at
BK> how good the movie was. Ok, that's damning with faint praise,
BK> and the logic of the plot was weak, but still better than I
 BK> expected. Ok, low expectations.

I haven't seen it for years; I'd like to rent it soon, so I probably will.
:)

AA> Memories is an excellent read, I highly recommend it.
AA> Another book I bought when I was a teen. It is time-travel
AA> based, with a very unique spin.

 BK> Remind us.

A scientist/pychiatrist invents a drug in the future that has unintended
"side-effects." She uses it to treat a patient who has been conditioned
for war by her society. It causes him to "recall" the memories of his
childhood, and his ancestors, one of whom is Napolean. He basically
mentally inhabits Napoleans body. The scientist tries to bring him back,
and can only accomplish this by reasoning for reasons mentioned in the
book. She has to take the drug herself of course. She then enlists the aid
of one of *her* ancestors, a psychiatrist from the late 20th century.

I think the book itself is very well done, and has a lot of surprising and
interesting twists and turns. I don't really know anything about
Napolean, and his history, or French History. if I did, it would have
probably been even a *better* read for me.

BK> I saw the movie version of "Nightfall", which was not as bad as
BK> the reviewers said, but still not real good.

I Never saw that or read the book.

BK> I refuse to see the movie "I Robot" cause I know from the
BK> previews it has no more relationship to the book than just the
 BK> name.

I might see it anyway; I never read the book. Though I've been more
disappointed than satisfied with movies I've seen in the last 5 years.

BK> The movie Starship Troopers was a mistake.

Never saw that. I like the song though, by... that gal..Sarah Brightman,
that's her name.

BK> I saw the previous movie version of the Lord Of the Rings. When
BK> I walked out of the theatre I thought the worst thing about this
BK> movie was that, after a disaster like that, no one will try for
BK> another 20 years. Well, it took 15 years, but this time they got
 BK> it right.

The only previous version I know of is the animated one. I didn't care for
Lord of the Rings, no matter how good a movie it was, or how many Oscars
it won. :) I've never been much for that type of fantasy; always geared
more toward sci-fi.
