subject: Businesses Want Standards

Hi Paul,
Nice to see you here again. Have you been on vacation?
-> How are educators, specifically teachers, suppose to take these
-> business leaders seriously?
Like I said before, it's nice that they're at least giving a fair amount
of attention to the schools. It would be better if they offered support
and asked the educators what they need to do their job more effectively
rather than telling them what they should do. Hmm. Well, I don't mind if
they want some input into a decision process about deciding standards,
but I don't think that governors and business(wo)men really should be in
charge of setting standards.
I am interested to hear more from Dale Hill later on about he report he
ordered from this conference and what it contains.
Ideally, I see professional organizations such as the NCTM or the NCTE,
etc... defining standards within their subject area. It shouldn't be a
political effort.
-> I'm
-> not excited about businesses attempting to raise standards. If these
-> guys really wanted to help out the country they negotiate labor
-> unions for fair contracts and stop the sinful acts of scale down
-> (where they everybody off to increase quarterly profits;

-> If business is serious about solving "the problem with
-> eduation", don't spoon feed the public common slogans which mean
-> nothing, they should work to improve the quality of life in this
-> nation.
Slogans are not very useful, I agree.
Sheila
