Congrats on the decision!  That is along the lines I've followed now for a
number of years, relying upon quality zooms over fixed focus for their added
versatility.  I suspect you will end up leaving this one on your camera
except for the relatively few times you need something they are not able to
produce.  I still use the old fixed focus lenses in studio work, for
products.  For anything live I'm much more productive with a zoom!
