I just got back from a Capitol Hill reception that was attended by a lot
of political professionals. A bunch of them made the point that
Republicans have normally lost in years when the presidential candidate
failed to get the NRA endorsement. I brought up the question, "What
happens if the NRA endorses Harry Browne?"
Nobody called that a stupid idea. Several of them smiled and said that
would make for an interesting race. All of them agreed that it would be
the death blow to the Dole campaign.
Now let's suppose that the NRA did give Browne the endorsement. It would
certainly increase the visibility of the Libertarian campaign and the
idea of actually repealing some gun control laws. It might be the key to
getting Browne into the presidential debates. It would certainly make
guns a key issue in the campaign and stimulate pro-gun Congressional
campaigns.
