Phil,
I read your note on Fido. I dug through all my information on PPS and
I think I have some ideas for you. First of all, the most recent
address I have for GINI, The International Polio Network is 5100
Oakland Ave, #206, St. Louis, Missouri 63110. The telephone number I
have is 314-534-0475. Also, if you want some really good information
about PPS, Dr. Richard Bruno is the Director of the Post-Polio
Rehabilitation Service at Kessler Institute. The address is 300 Market
Street, Saddle Brook, NJ 07662. I had the opportunity to have both
physical therapy and occupational therapy at Kessler. I spoke with Dr.
Bruno quite a few times. He has his Ph.D. and is a psychologist. What
a wonderful man and a dynamic speaker. He has been on television
speaking about PPS. As for myself, I had polio in August of 1949 when
I was a few months of my third birthday. I also have muscle aches but
the worst part is the fatique. The one thing I learned at Kessler was
that PPS people must learn to slow down, rest and conserve energy.
Sit, don't stand and if possible, lie down when you can. It's hard to
do when you are use to being active.
I hope this information is useful to you. Also check in your area to
see if there are any support groups. Knowing there are other PPS
people who are working and having a great life is helpful. The
International Polio Network publishes a directory of all health
professionals, clinics and support groups all around the world. They
group them according to states. It probably costs less than $10.00 and
is well worth it. I hope I answered some of your questions. Good luck
- just remember to rest.
