Find out if a building permit is required and make sure the
contractor is responsible to obtaining one, if so.
Find out if you can overlay what's there or if it's going to be a
tear-off/re-decking job. Many codes allow only two layers before a
tear-off is required.
Make sure proper disposal of waste material is dealt with in your
contract.
Find out about their warranty policy against leaks.
Find out how they plan to remove escapee roofing nails from your property
(They're really nasty projectiles when you mow.) and especially your
driveway. Make sure they do this clean-up at least daily!
Make sure they store their materials, supplies and tools in a neat
and orderly fashion when (and if) the job takes more than one day to
complete.
Deal with reputable firms who have a track record in your area. Ask
for and check references. Check with your local BBB.
Steeply pitched roofs should require some safety toerails or
harnesses for the workers. Ask the foreman to ensure that all
appropriate safety precautions be exercised while they're working on
your premise.
Good luck!
