subject: Legality of Commandeering

CS>SK> Well, a cop that misplaced his keys to his squad car is not a
CS>SK> very effectual cop. :-P
CS>Steve, perhaps you come from an area where all the cops are in cars
CS>all the time?
No. I'm not.
CS> That might explain your confusion.
I have no confusion. That was humor. That tongue out thingie would be a
clue that it was.
CS> It doesnt work that way in all cities or all situations.
I know.
CS>Examples: San Diego, several ride the trolley lines. I suppose a
CS>squad car is parked at one of the park and rides, but the cop is
CS>hardly taking his car on the trolley!
My, you are informative. :-P
CS> They stop off, mill about the various stops, and take another
CS>trolley later.
Yep. Been there...seen that.
But it still isn't my job to supply the police with transportation just
because they put themselves in the position of being without any. That's
just plain bad planning.
CS>Large outdoor events such as I imagine MardiGras must work (and
CS>Clemson football games etc). Streets blocked to cars, walking only.
Well, if the streets are blocked by cars...commandeering mine wouldn't
make much sense, now would it?
CS>I'm sure others have other examples for you.
Ummmm, I don't need any examples. Because, as I stated, it was humor.
I have addressed my beliefs on the subject of commandeering to a point
of redundancy. I'll explain it to you...I think that the surrendering of
basic rights (in this case the right to own and keep personal property,
and not surrendering it without due process) is paramount. Of course
silly hypotheticals can be developed to make the case that my rights
should be violated, but I won't submit or agree to such violations. The
maintaining of basic rights is more important than hypotheticals. I'm
also against having a police state. Therefore, if some REAL emergency
were to develop _I_ am the one that decides my involvement. To be
coerced by physical force or punishment is both uncalled for (because
I'd probably volunteer my help) and authoritarian.
Regards, Steve
