I know very little about pictures, but are you aware that before XP (I
think), Explorer would make a thumbnail and insert it in an alternate data
stream of the picture file (assuming an NTFS partition). I am told that on
XP, Explorer puts thumbnails in a thumbs.db file instead.

There is a free utility at www.sysinternals.com for listing what streams
are in a file.
