I haven't investigated yet, but a quick attempt at Windows Update here did
not work (XP SP2). Using netstat showed that the computer was attempting to
access some external IP (http), but the computer is configured to use a
proxy server and direct access is not available.

That is, the Windows Update should use the proxy, but it didn't.
