To locate the Earth they should understand the measuring units. There is 
a real story on this account, that can we told as an anecdote about the 
scientists:

Carl Sagen, was the one of the authors of that golden plate with 
information about the Earth. The first variant of the plate depicted a 
man and woman holding each other hands. Idyll in short. :)
"Oh," Sagen said, "no, this picture is not clear - the aliens will think 
that the humans are double-body creatures!!!"  So, the man and the woman 
were separated. Then Sagen put on the plate his small picture
which portrayed (sorry) "the spin-flip transition of a hydrogen atom's 
electron", which should serve as the guide for calculating the measuring 
units. He thought his picture was easier for understanding then the 
picture of man and a woman holding their hands... ;-)
