TR> ASKACOP.
You are, of course, entirely correct, and I'll try to reign in my enthusiasm
(?!) and be more topical.
Speaking of which - a guy that works for me has 7 years on the force - the
last 5 detailed one place or another. He had the bad grace to shoot a person
exiting a stolen car after being fired upon (NOT the perp, the cop). He had
the misfortune to have good aim in poor visibility, and returned the fire -
the guy died, but the entry was in his back. Guy had a record, was known as
a
bad guy - no gun found. He's been tried once already (they tried to indict
for murder, got manslaughter, and he was tried on voluntary manslaughter,
hung
the jury) almost 5 years ago, and now he's once again supposed to be retried
-
and just got postponed again until August.
He was a good cop. He'll probably never go back on the street - and because
he's under indictment, he can't carry (which effectively paints a target on
his short, white-blond Aryan-appearing butt) and nobody knows when it'll end.
Involuntary manslaughter carries a mandatory 3 years, and we've already had
one cop locked up for three years when a car thief took off with the cop's
arm
in his window, and was shot for his effort after dragging the cop for a bit.
THAT cop was not highly regarded, but he still got screwed.
How long does it usually take to try a cop in one of these? The shooting is
5
years old - and until that is done we won't know if there's a civil action to
face or not.
Strikes me that this is beyond reason.
Oh, yes - did I forget - in both cases the perp was black, the cops white -
but that isn't supposed to have anything to do with the proceedings....
