Squabble among factions on the board. One faction had control
of what went into the magazine and used it to campaign against
the other faction, was successful enough to get control of the
nominating committee, refused to renominate members of other faction
as their terms came up, and when they got themselves nominated anyway
by petition, published "Do Not Vote For" ads.

Since most NRA voting members do not read tpg and probably get
most of their information about NRA from the magazine, the faction
controlling the magazine pretty much gets to self-perpetuate as
long as they want. Among NRA members who DO read tpg, opinions
were basically split slightly more in favor of the faction that
had control of the magazine, nominating committee, etc.

A few years ago the factions weren't factions at all, when they
had their falling out, the numbers of each side on the board were
roughly evenly split.

Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing depends on which
faction you support.

The history of the squabble is on the Web, I don't know the
site for the faction that won (Haas's side) but the site for
the dissidents is www.nealknox.com. Perhaps someone on the
other side can post the site with their version of events.

Personally, I side with the Knox folks. I think the membership
has lost a lot of control over NRA, the board has been packed
with yes-men of the PR firm Ackerman-McQueen, and that NRA's
effectiveness at preserving the rights of gun owners has been
seriously injured, and I feel like drumming up donations to pay
Ackerman-McQueen and friends more money may have become more
important than preserving gun rights--I'm concerned about the
conflict of interest there. The programs are still pretty good,
but judging from the decline in quality of the magazine just since
I first joined, I'm afraid the quality of the programs may
eventually suffer, although on that count I hope I'm wrong.
