The Helford River, in Cornwall, UK is a salt water inlet (ria)
resulting from the drowning of the valley system some 10,000 years
ago. It is famous for its beauty, its sailing facilities and its
superb oysters. The Duchy Oysterage is an important commercial
activity on the River and the purity of the water is an essential
factor. The River is also of international importance for the
abundance of its marine wildlife; the beds of Eel-grass (Zostera) and
calcified seaeweed (Maerl), a coral like plant, are of particular
importance.
The designation of the Helford River as a Voluntary Marine
Conservation Area draws attention to the importance of its marine
life. Intensive use of the River and its shores brings increased
pressure on its natural systems which therefore need to be monitored
and safeguarded, particularly the Sensitive areas with their mix of
silt, sand and gravel.
The River is protected nursery for Bass, which can only be taken by
shore angelers. Fishing with fixed nets is banned in all parts of the
River.
The local authority administers a Bye Law which limits the speed of
boats to 6 Knots in a large part of the River.
Supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature (UK) as well as local
organisations the HVMCA aims to achieve by voluntary means the
harmonious use of the river and to monitor the quality of the marine
environment.
