GP>*5 SEEKING TO DEFINE WORLD CLASS STANDARDS: CONSORTIUM EMERGES
GP> Teachers in a consortium of schools located in several
GP>nations plan to tackle the challenge of defining world class
GP>standards (COUNCIL FOR BASIC EDUCATION press release, 6/20). The
GP>group emerged from a consortium hosted by the Washington, D.C.-
GP>based Council for Basic Education at the Rockefeller Center in
GP>Bellagio, Italy.
GP> Delegates from Australia, Chile, Czech Republic, France,
GP>Germany, the International Baccalaureate Organization, Japan the
GP>United Kingdom and the United States attended the meeting.
GP>"Every nation represented at the meeting understands the global
GP>nature of the labor force of the future and the implication that
GP>internationalization has for the education systems in each
GP>nation," said CBE President Christopher Cross. "We all also
GP>understand that communication needs to be vastly improved if we
GP>are to understand exactly what students in other nations are
GP>expected and able to do relative to specific subjects like
GP>science, language and geography."
GP> Cross explained that the consortium intends to attract
GP>between 16 and 24 schools in several countries. The consortium
GP>will use the Internet by developing a Home Page for "dialogue and
GP>to facilitate the sharing of actual student work in specific
GP>subjects at various ages," said Cross. He added: "By doing this
GP>we will clearly know where the best work is being done, what that
GP>work consists of, how students are taught, and how they are
GP>assessed. Most importantly, it will be teachers talking with
GP>teachers, learning from one another and learning what can be done
GP>... The result will be that we can establish precisely what a
GP>world class standards is in specific subjects at specific grade
GP>levels."
GP> CBE will assume the role of international coordinator of the
GP>project and will work with the U.S. schools. CBE also will
GP>publish the common lexicon and a series of papers on world class
GP>standards.
GP> CBE is a non-profit membership organization devoted to
GP>advocacy of a "rigorous liberal arts education for all children
GP>in the nation's elementary and secondary schools," writes the
GP>release.
