While the labels are definitely guilty of providing the perks/funds/payola,
they did NOT do it totally willingly. Most were dragged quietly kicking
and screaming as stations realized that they had a willing source of
"stuff" they could blackmail in these lines. As long as all of
the labels originally said NO, it was OK, but the floodgates opened quite a
long time ago, especially as the whole radio industry consolidated (Think
Clearchannel and all the other mega-media conglomerates bought up all the
various outlets. That's the REAL killer of varied content on the radio, NO
local control).
