Personally, I found it hard to believe that Saddam was hiding in that
"spider hole" when he was found. It would be possible to build it
using "cut and cover", or perhaps with a machine, but I doubt it
could have been dug vertically & then horizontally by hand when it 
was only the area of a "broccoli box". Try standing in a hole like
that, let alone digging a horizontal chamber at the bottom. :)
