BL> So did I. A good businessman always looks after his investment, BL> and a slave was a *major* investment. You could buy a good BL> horse for $100 in those days, and only a fool would let his BL> horse suffer for lack of maintenance. So for his slave, BL> times-ten... RB> I didn't think you bought them, not after the first generation RB> anyway. After that, they bred themselves, and if they didn't, RB> the whites rutted on the black women. It was both! They were still transporting slaves to the US well into the 19th Century. Like breeding horses, you sold the get as well as buying fresh blood. Aside from the poor-bloody slaves themselves, slave owners hardened themselves against humanity in order to justify the evil they did - just as soldiers do in war, and return as damaged human beings. We humans are very good at justifying oureselves. I worry about Tories and Republicans, who like Nazis put the State, or profit, ahead of human beings. All you need is a brass band and a maniac like Hitler (or an easily-led idiot like George Dubya), and hell breaks out all over. RB>> I've seen a few stickers on bus shelters in London offering RB>> specialised services... "Love me! Spank me! All tastes catered RB>> for!" BL> And it's cheaper than buying a slave, too. Just hire one for BL> the night. sigh> everybody's outsourcing these days... ROFL!! Good one. RB> CBIP: MOBY DICK by Herman Melville Moby Dick! I have never read Moby Dick. I tried a few times, but the prose put me to sleep. RB> Just finished: HAT FULL OF SKY by Terry Pratchett. You brighten my day. The World can't be all bad if Pterry keeps writing. RB> Just finished: GRIM TUESDAY by Garth Nix, Vol. 2 in the "Keeper RB> of the Keys" series. Couldn't put it down! Jeeze! I didn't know he had written anew! I'll see if I can hunt it down.
