Rich,
Most people don't try to understand much of anything. Religion is just one
more subject about which that is true.
The "exceptionalism" beliefs in Christianity prevent a number of
its believers from realizing that a lot of the reactions to their ideas and
to their religion are not really reflections of the contents of that
particular religion but rather are a measure of something more general: how
humans perceive reality in general.
I think you are coming at this with a ready-made explanation of why people
act the way they do and that explanation is a religious one. It would be
more productive (though quite a lot less faith affirming) if you started
out without any ideas about why people act the way they do and then start
to think of lots of more common place explanations before invoking God.
