There's that bit in CATCH 22 where Milo Minderbinder gets the contract from 
the Allies to destroy a German-held bridge, -and- the contract from the 
Germans to defend it.  So he does some calculations, and decides that the 
value of the bridge to the Allies is exactly equal to the value of the 
aircraft and lives lost by the Allies (read, US) in destroying it.  So he 
does precisely nothing, at vast profit.
