don't leave the light(s) on all the time. if you can, put them on a
timer that runs an hour or two less then normal daylight hours. have it come 
on in the morning about an hour or so after sunrise and have it turn off an 
hour or so before sunset...
2.
cut back on how much you feed the fish. overfeeding is a major cause.
these two factors are the biggest contributors that i'm aware of...
