On the old NEC mini systems (astra systems) there was a command esc ^M to
get into the monitor. Seemed simple enough except I found it worked when
you dialed into a remote system and were sitting at a login prompt.
This had existed for 10 years before I found it howerver when I
demonstrated it to the techs at NEC, they ended up putting a button on the
front of the machine to replace this command as a fix. Know why? Because
modems changed everything. Things that were OK before the internet aren't
safe anymore.
