The two most common reasons given by the criminals
themselves are "protection" and 'the gang is like a
family to me'. IOW then feel that if they didn't join
a gang then it, or another one, would kill them or the
fact that there is no family at home (for what ever
reason) leads them to look for support outside.
Very few gang members have much money and the youngest
have the least (even in a gang you have to start out at
the bottom). Just like in a business the people
running the operation handle the money but unlike in a
business they tend to spend it all on themselves.
