Bill Gates got rich because IBM made a very STUPID
choice!!  Well several but only one that effected
Gates.  They choose NOT to buy DOS but to allow Gates
to keep control of it.  If IBM had made the choice to
buy it Gates would be nothing more then a well paid
programmer somewhere.
Once Billy boy had DOS he had the PC world by the short
hairs because you can't run a PC with out an operating
system.  Now if anyone had jump on the wagon and wrote
a competing OS Billy might not have the money he has.
The last time I checked there were at least three other
OS out there (not to mention just buying a Mac).  But
you choose to use MSDOS/WIN3.X/WIN95 because you choose
to run programs that need that system.  You might
choose those because very people choose to write
programs that will run under the other OSs because
there isn't much money to be made in it.
I run windoze, I hate it but I run it, because the
programs I want to use require it.  It is the ONLY
microsoft program I have and if it hadn't came with the
machine I don't think I would have bought it.
