subject: Beware of shoddy dealers

-=> Quoting Albert Sodyl to JONATHAN DE BOYNE POLLARD <=-

 AS> * MOOD: You are a friend :)

AS> Hey JONATHAN DE BOYNE POLLARD, what's up?

AS> JONATHAN DE BOYNE POLLARD was heard grumbling this to ALBERT SODYL
AS> about Beware of shoddy dealers!
AS>> (There's this guy I know, when you buy a computer from him, he
AS>> can add any commercial software on your computer [without the
AS>> CDs] and any games, [...]

JDBP> As soon as you added the phrase "[without the CDs]" alarm bells
JDBP> started ringing. Be very wary of a computer dealer who doesn't
JDBP> give you the original installation discs along with the
JDBP> hardware, even if his excuse is that he has already installed
JDBP> the software for you. Even if he preinstalls everything for
JDBP> you, he should still provide you with the manuals, boxes, and
JDBP> all discs for the software that he has preinstalled.

AS> Well that would not really be fair for him because he gives me as much
AS> software as I want, up to 10 gigs free and any programs/files because
AS> he is licensed to do that. Come on, 99.9% of the people who sell
AS> computers, don't give you anything with your cpu. I figure that free
AS> software shouldn't have to have manuals and all that stuff. If I want
AS> the whole thing, I'd buy it for $100. But I don't care if I'll have
AS> OS/2 and everything without paying a cent and a whole computer with
AS> everything and 4 gigs of progs for 1,500 CA money, I think I don't care
AS> for the manuals. Why do I need 142 manuals and 162 discs? I could get
AS> them but I'd have to pay for them which would be like more then 500
 AS> dollars.

You've just made it virtually *certain* that he's putting *pirated*
software on those systems. If the software publishers feel like making
an example, *you* could draw fines, and maybe even jail time.

If you were in the US, you could draw some really *nasty* fines, and
multiple years in prison.

AS> Not really I get it for free because he is licensed to get me anything
AS> he wants on there, don't ask me about that stuff, ask him, all I care
 AS> is that it's free.

Unless you get the CDs, Floppies, or at least the proper "licensing
certificate" from him, it's *not* free. It's *stolen goods*.

JDBP> So whenever a dealer tries to "explain" that no, he is required
JDBP> to hang on to the original installation discs and cannot give
JDBP> them to you, and no, he cannot even supply you with a software
JDBP> licence pack of any sort for the software that you have
JDBP> supposedly bought, be very wary.

AS> I didn't buy anything, I get everything for free 10 gigs of anything
AS> you want for free along with a new computer.

Sorry, but *legally* you *did* buy it. As part of the cost of the
system. Also, the penalties for copyright infringement *don't* care if
money changed hands.

The *least* your are going to lose if the law gets involved is the
computer.
