CB>DT>If in math period one with Mr. Algebra was for males only, then
CB>DT>period 2 females only...isn't that equal? I don't know that the
CB>DT>VMI decision is that similar to the concept of single-sex classes
CB>DT>in highshcool. I have heard some good arguments in favor of the
CB>DT>idea (of which I am not stating support just doing some

CB>I do believe that Matt Smith was on the money with his analysis of
CB>this problem - public schools will most likely not be allowed to

You may be right. Public schools probably don't want the hassles such
an idea would bring anyway.
In the case of The Citadel and
CB>VMI, as I understand it, Virginia was willing to compromise by
CB>making VMI into either a mixed sex military school or an all-female
CB>military school, but the courts still considered that discrimination
CB>as long as The Citadel was not available to women.
One has to wonder though (Ok...I have to wonder). What is the big deal
of an all-male school? It has an historic tradition that goes back 100+
years (Im guessing). Why is it now considered "unconstitutional" to
have an all-male or all-female school? Oh yeah, this is the 90's and
all this equality stuff seems important. Never mind about historic
tradition. With women allowed in the Citadel, it will no longer be the
place it once was historically. It will become a new school. And for
what purpose? So that a very few women could enroll and we in America
could applaud our valiant efforts and continual progress to eliminate
all elements of segregation.
Forget the argument about blacks. When someone brings up the subject of
racial segregation and ties it into sex segregation then there is no
argument. Racial segregation is morally wrong. But when you are
speaking of a single sex school, the purpose is not to exclude one sex.
One would have to admit that a single-sex school can focus on things in
different ways than can a coed facility.
There are many coed educational facilities in this country to choose
from. I see nothing wrong with having a Citadel where only men attend.
Men and women are different in many ways and I don't see society having
the obligation to try to make those differences less apparent.
I know that many may not agree with my views here. That is ok. I
additionally feel that all-female schools should be allowed. Why must
every historic institution we have in America be bias free? (And
according to whose criteria?) Well Charles, now look what you've
started . I suppose Im the only one here with these views.
