subject: HELP WITH BATTERY CHARGE

I have two batteries on my boat. They are managed through a
battery switch which enables me to select 1, 2 or both batteries.
I have a battery charger that I can limit to a 2 amp charge. I
would like to charge each battery through the cigarette lighter
receptacle without disconnecting the battery cables. I have a
plug which I can easily wire to the charger clips. The boat will
be out of the water (on a lift) while being charged. Could I
select a battery and plug the charger into the lighter?
Is this safe for the alternator? Would it work? Any suggestions
will be appreciated.
BTW, it is a Volvo/penta 5.7 rig.
