Is there any "More safe" way to maintain an address book across many
devices?

I am thinking a gMail account, but don't use gMail...just the gMail
"Contacts" and sync them to whatever handheld devices and maybe (by some
means I don't know about) sync them to the persons eMail client.

i.e. the convenience of a shared address book without the exposure....
