I have the icon always visible, and it doesn't appear to ever go offline
(no balloon, no red cross).

My suggestion, if you haven't already, is to check the option to show an
icon in the tray for your network connection from the network control
panel. After you have done so pay attention for any notifications that the
connection is offline.

It's possible, I'll have to see if I can get anything out of the thing -
I've installed a few very similar boxes (father-in-law, sister), and this
is
the first one where anything "happens", but it could be
different firmware
or something like that.
Do you happen to know if there is a setting in Windows / OE / IE
somewhere,
to not pop up that question but simply automatically connect?
