Well, Bobby Cox is now a happy man. He no longer has to worry about all the
other contenders stealing that important piece of the Braves' puzzle, Rafael
Belliard anymore. Maybe he can get that other offensive jugernaut, Mark
Lemke, next...
ATLANTA (Dec 5, 1997 - 19:41 EST) -- Rafael Belliard, who has been with the
Atlanta Braves throughout their postseason streak of the 1990s, agreed Friday
to a minor-league contract.
Belliard, a 36-year-old reserve infielder, hit .211 with one homer and three
RBIs in 72 games for the Braves last season. His homer on Sept. 26 was his
first in a decade.
After playing for Pittsburgh's division-winning team in 1990, Belliard signed
with Atlanta and has been part of the Braves' six straight postseason teams.
Mainly known for his defensive work, Belliard has batted .221 with two homers
and 141 RBIs during a 13 1/2-year major-league career.
The deal contains a letter agreement that would give Belliard a $250,000,
one-year contract if he's added to the major-league roster.
