BT> Arn't we suppose to see new TEAMS this spring? The Red Sox had to
BT> give up 2 players for the EXPANSION. I don't think that D.C. is a
BT> place considered.
The new teams that debut this spring are the Arizona Diamondbacks and the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Diamondbacks will join the National League in the
Western division (so the Western division will look like this : Arizona,
Colorado, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco). The Devil Rays will be
joining the American League's Eastern division. The Detroit Tigers will be
leaving the AL East for the AL Central, and Milwaukee will become a NL city
once again as the Brewers are supposed to be switching to the NL Central
division. I don't know when the next expansion will be (I think it will
probably be around 2001), but if Washington gets a new team in the next few
years it will probably be an NL team since Baltimore is in the AL.
BT> I didn't know that the original Senators were going to move again.
Well there's a chance that they might stay in Minneapolis/St. Paul instead of
moving to either the Triad (Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem) or
Charlotte. There is at least one team owner that will not approve of the
Twins moving to North Carolina. Minnesota's stadium deadline (Nov. 30th) has
already passed. North Carolina businessman Don Beaver will end up buying the
team, but that doesn't mean that the Twins will move down south. Even if the
move is approved (for the team to move to the Triad the voters in Guilford
and Forsyth Counties in North Carolina have to approve a sales tax increase
to pay for a stadium, and if that fails the team will then move to a
temporary stadium in Charlotte then a new baseball stadium would be built in
downtown Charlotte and that would be their new home), the Twins wouls still
play the 1998 season in the Metrodome. So 1999 would be the earliest that the
Twins would play in North Carolina...I also heard that if the team plays in
the Triad the team's nickname would be changed to the Triplets.
