Let's assume, for a moment, that we actually *know* what the Queen's
York Rangers are... some kind of wilderness rescue squad or something?
Let's further assume that you actually work for these people:

In this instance, you may (in real life - IRL) come across a child in
distress.  This child's parents (mother, specifically) is not
emotionally or spiritually suited to care for the child properly.  The
guilt / shame involved on the part of the mother causes her to run
away from the child, possibly via a jail sentence or other form of
child abandonment.  You will give (or have recently given) the (human)
child a hug, although you couldn't do it immediately due to the
circumstances of your work -- enforcement agents have strict protocols
that supercede emotional support.

Something about the parents struck you as odd -- flight risks,
perhaps?  Thus, you've cast them / indirectly thought of them as
"birds" -- "he looks like a ___ and she looks like a ___ type of
bird." -- People do this a lot without realizing it.  I was parked at
a convenience store the other day, and noticed that in the car to my
left, in the passenger seat (this is in the USA) was a woman and a
dog.  But -- so help me God -- they looked like (nearly twin) sisters,
and it took me a moment to realize that the dog was a canine, and the
human was not!  (This dog had pale, bright blue eyes, and I think the
woman's were brown.)
