AB> Understandable for the Canadian shop since its a private shop, but
AB> completely unacceptable in my opinion on part of OTC. As an
AB> electronics technician, if I had to face this "Sorry we don't sell
AB> service literature" from Sony, JVC, Electrohome etc, I'd have many
AB> disgruntled customers, and an equally, if not moreso, disgruntled Me!
AB>
AB> I can understand them not wanting people to copy their equipment, but
AB> thats what patents and copyrights are for. I don't see Sony et all
AB> suffering low volume sales, and they sell schematics and parts 'n
AB> peices galore. Hell, theres even Sam's literature as an independant
AB> supplier of schematics for non-automotive electronic equipment. They
AB> can do it, why does the automotive electronic industry have to be so
AB> dang anti independant service? Just thought of a good analogy for my
AB> OTC situation. (Along with deleting a page of ramblings on the topic)
AB> =-) What if GM/Ford/ChryCo/etc. was to say, "Sorry, but we
AB> won't sell you parts or repair manuals for our cars, You have to
AB> come to one of our authorized GM/Ford/ChryCo/etc dealerships for ALL
AB> your repair needs. All you indpendants stick to repairing lawn mower
AB> engines, ours autos are top secret and we can't give you information
AB> on them." Same Sh*t. Different Pile. I don't think something like
AB> that would wash too well with the independant industry. And of
AB> course, to keep the analogy completely the same, there are
AB> no independant service manual sources for the above vehicles.
Proprietary information is usually guarded very well. It may be the simplest
thing in the world, but if it's in a black box, you won't know what it is and
the manufacturer isn't going to tell you for any amount of money. Just
something we all have to live with.
... Veni, Vidi, Visa... I came, I saw, I shopped.
