subject: Class Size Over-Rated

MB>Chuck:
MB>Certainly the study makes sense.
MB>In fact, it certainly makes sense that a smaller class size -- hence a
MB>higher teacher:student ratio -- would be most helpful.
MB>But, keep in mind that I am really writing this post from my perspective
MB>as a high school teacher (mathematics) for about 27 years.
I have taught 8th annd 9th grade math for 27 years. ;-)
MB>I realize my information is merely anecdotal.
MB>But, AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, I submit that there is certainly a
MB>correlation between success and class size (smaller size tending
MB>towards increased success). But that correlation is a loose one.
MB>I have just had so many joyful classes that were large, but had a great
MB>mix of students. In other words, what I like to call the "right
MB>chemistry."
MB>On the other hand, I have had smaller classes that just didn't jell.
MB>Perhaps things were just oo dull. It was the wrong mix. We didn't have
MB>the critical mass to really move forward.
MB>Anyway, that's just my perception.
MB>Based on the input from others, it would seem that there is a
MB>much more significant correlation at the elementary levels.
Like any study, the Star Project took averages. I agree that the proper
"mix" in a class can make a big difference, as can the charisma of the
teacher or the personalities of the students who take the leadership
role in a class. Certainly there are lots of factors involved in the
success of students in an educational program and class size is but one
of the important ones.
