Hmm... and the only ones since I can think of off the top of my head is 
trife
which isn't entirely a "3d shoot em up" or "doom clone"

Hmm.. haven't heard of this feature in any other game either.
But it makes me wonder, if no other company (afaik) used them are they 
innovations
or poor features? *grin*
The main problem with 2 is it can be frustrating to go by a level without
finding the switch then not being able to wander around till you find it 
ater
:)
The one thing it would be very good for is making hard to find secret levels.
