You don't have to use {tc} codes, if you use heading numbering.
We use "heading 1, heading 2, ... heading n" styles. Page numbering style is
simply done by telling it to include chapter numbers (a simple check box in
the "insert page number" dialog). TOC is defined to be built from "heading 1
= TOC1 style", etc. This is all done using built-in ways of working in Word.
It doesn't require using any field codes.
Regarding your requirement to have each chapter be an independent document --
does that mean that a chapter number would be inappropriate when printed as
an independent document? Your client is really making it hard on you.
