Quoting David Hartung to Chuck Horn:
DH> As my father has pointed out on numerous occasions, the ACLU is an
DH> organization which could do much good in our society, yet they have
DH> chosen to champion causes which have a destructive effect on our social
DH> structure. As has been pointed out in another post, the founder of the
DH> ACLU, stated in plain text that he was working for Communism, to date,
DH> I know of no instance where the ACLU has repudiated this stand.
I would suggest that if any of us were to read a list of cases that
the ACLU has defended over the years that we would agree with their
position on some and disagree with others. I would further suggest
that we might agree with them on cases from 30 and 40 years ago
that we might not have agreed with at the time.
I guess if I have a point to make it is that, of the pantheon of
liberal organizations, I consider the ACLU to be one of the least
objectionable. Most conservatives I know have the opposite opinion.
What bothers me is that their opposition seems to be an irrational,
almost visceral, loathing of a group that occasionally seems to be
doing our job better than we are. I am not a member of the ACLU.
An organization which I AM a member of and which is dedicated to
preserving personal freedoms elicits an identical response from the
left. Ask a liberal why they hate the NRA and you get a list of
baseless generalizations and outright misconceptions. Might it be
that conservatives make the same mistake when judging the ACLU?
