-> Gee... It's beginning to sound like a RS showroom around here :)
  That should awaken some sleeping tigers. At the risk of expressing
disloyalty to Fido, there are many scanner reviews on the internet. Some
scanners are good in some bands, but not in others. For example, my interest
is in listening to trains. The RS PRO-60, though otherwise excellent, is
prone to interference in the 160-162MHz range, which unfortunately is right
where the trains are. If you don't listen to trains, why should you care? Its
many other virtues might make it the scanner of choice for you. It's now
discontinued, but RS has the nice habit of running what is known as a "dutch
auction" with its discontinued stuff. That's one in which the price drops
until someone can't resist the bargain and snaps up the item. Look around;
you might find a terrific deal that way.
  Someone recommended pawn shops. They must be better where he is than the
ones I've been in. Their prices strike me as being on the rather high side.
As they say, your mileage may vary.
  Scanners are like everything else: you're buying it to suit your purposes.
Go ahead and listen to others, but you're the final judge of what is right
for you.
