JP> North Carolina: Republican Senator Jesse Helms, one of the most
JP> reliable pro-gun votes in the U.S. Senate will have a tough race
JP> against anti-gun former mayor of Charlotte, Harvey Gantt.
I _live_ in this state and have for a long time.
Gantt is a very weak candidate. He is backed mostly by out-of-state
liberals, much of his financing coming from Hollywood...something that's no
secret down here!! He's seen as a "quota king" as a result of his profiting
from a business deal on a minority-set-aside broadcast license which he
resold soon after to whites...an issue that hits Gantt among blacks too,
because they see him as a sellout on it. Quotas were a major issue in his
last try, and the quota issue will hit Gantt even harder now due to the
"downsizing" economy and fiercer competition for good jobs.
Gantt isn't a skilled campaigner. His fans have very unrealistic
expectations for him, as they did last time. For Gantt to win, he'd need to
get every black vote and a very high share of those white voters left over
after subtracting out those whites who'd just never vote for a black
candidate.
JP> The Fourth Congressional District, which takes in Raleigh and Chapel
JP> Hill is extra-important for the gun rights movement. Former New York
JP> City police officer Fred Heineman, who served as Raleigh's Police
JP> Chief for 15 years and is the freshman congressman, is an important
JP> voice for the gun rights movement in Congress because of his law
JP> enforcement experience. Having won last time out by less than a
JP> thousand votes, he is a key target of the gun grabbers who can't
JP> stand
JP> to see a pro-gun law enforcement spokesman.
But is his opponent _credible_?
