JANE KELLEY was thinking about Ritalin and keyed into cyberspace:
JK>As far as drugs are concerned, and their effects on humans, I refer
JK>you to "Alcohol Health & Research World" which has articles in it
JK>that go into such things as "Alcohol-Related Cognitive Impariments:
JK>An Overview of How Alcoholism May Affect the Workings of the Brain"
JK>or "Alcohol-Related Thiamine Deficiency: Impace on Cognitive and
JK>Memory Functioning, "Cognitive Impairment in Children of
JK>Alcoholics", etc., etc. etc.
JK>They can be found by looking at the drug and alcohol side of nih. or
JK>niaaa.
Jane, are you aware that this conference is about ADHD and not
ethanolism?
JK>I learned that Mark Keller has just died but that Marc Schuckit,
JK>M.D., the Professor of Psychiatry at UCSD School of Medicine and
JK>Director of the Alcohol Research Center in San Diego is still very
JK>much alive. His lecture, "A Prospective Study of Genetic and
JK>Enviornmental Influences in Alcoholism: Working Toward Prevention"
JK>was given back in Bethesda as part of the National Institute on
JK>Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
JK>I would far rather read what he has to say on this supposed new
JK>disease we call ADD or ADHD than the authors you refer. I know that
JK>Schuckit's background includes many studies on drug addicts and
JK>alcoholics and that he does have the ability to recognize one when
JK>he encounters it.
First off, clueless one, ADHD has "been around" for over a hundred years
in the medical literature.
The "authors" of the NIH/NIMH material are some of the leading minds in
medicine in the world. Are you even slightly aware of how a person is
selected for a position at NIH/NIMH?
I happen to be. My youngest son's pediatric neurosurgeon will spend two
years there on a special fellowship doing research into neurosurgery for
kids with CP.
JK>Cannot say the same for whoever put together the material you
JK>advocated I read.
Of course you can. Try it.
Whenever drugs such as alcohol and cocaine are
JK>given as a cause of something, to leave out of all history taking
JK>and consideration is to invalidate all of the work done.
JK>And that is exactly what I think of it.....invalid. Most schools
JK>will not know the drug habits of the parents of the children they
JK>have in their care. They will not know if some mother used cocaine
JK>or drank during her pregnancy and then quit later on.
Why do so many kids with ADHD have parents who have absolutely no
history of ethanol or chemical abuse? There is no cause=effect for abuse
while pregnant and true ADHD.
JK>And we have not been given this information by DSHD when my daughter
JK>adopted the two children she has. This is criminal. To leave out
JK>such vital information to anyone caring for youngsters in this day
JK>and age cripples them in providing proper health care.
JK>Anyone who is likely to come into contact with genetic alcoholics
JK>and drug abusers should have to take enough courses in chemical
JK>dependency to be able to spot them or should never have a state
JK>license to do anything at all around them except sweep the floor and
JK>clean out toilets!
However, we are not discussing alcoholics.
The Few. The Proud. The Chosen.
