I thought part of the discussion was in locations that needed to pull the
patches over a slow link for each computer. Sure, you can do a memory
stick, and go to each computer, or a usb hd, but what's the aversion to an
automated approach, where you have, basically, an internal Windows Update
location, that gets ALL the patches, and provides you with an approval
screen where you select which patches are to be appled to the machines?
I've had great luck with the free SUS and now WSUS's running internally on
one of our servers. All the local computers are now re-configued through
the group policy to look to the local server for their updates, and apply
whatever has been approved on the server itself. Literally takes me no
time each time patches are downloaded, to approve, and the next morning,
every machine in the office is patched. Since I don't do the IT/Network
guru stuff all the time, this is a tremendous time saver for me.
