The scanners work by aquiring and translating the system code from
the data channel. Once the scanner has aquired the data channel, it
will then start following the talkgroups and you hear both sides
of the conversation. However, these scanners can only track
Motorola trunked logic systems using analog transmissions. If
a trunked system is using digital, you will not hear anything.
Further, you can only scan ONE trunked system at a time. That is,
all talk groups that share the information in the data channel can
be heard, but no other systems in different areas with different
data channels. You also cannot monitor conventional frequencies while
in the trunk tracker mode. It's an "all or nothing" proposition.
I have the Uniden BC 895XLT base-station scanner and it works extremely
well under its limitations. If you want to monitor trunked AND
conventinal systems, or two different trunked systems, you'll need
two or more scanners to listen to everything.
