Buckyballs were well after I got my Chem degree in '67, and
I've been in IT since. But from what I understand, modelling
this as a "super benzene ring", it wouldn't be "charged"--it's
an organic molecule. There are molecular orbitals similar to
atomic orbitals, though their energy levels aren't nearly as
precise--which is why dyes radiate/absorb over wide bands.
I'd say the electrons can do the QM jump between orbitals and
radiate, but I'm not sure I'd consider that a moving charge.

BTW, my PBS station is in pledge and showed the first of the
Nova string-theory shows last night. Got into quantum mechanics.
I didn't like it the first time I saw it, and I don't like it now.
"Quantum mechanics is so unlike the real world of your experience,
so WIERD, that you can't understand it." So they dumb it all down
to make a self-fulfilling propecy, and thus avoid presenting any
of the marvelous things about QM. They do the same thing with the
topology, and everything else so they can just show little wavy
circles which don't demonstrate anything!

p.s. Have you ever looked up the etymology of "wierd"? It derives
from a word meaning "fate", more or less. Which makes it most
inappropriate for QM's unpredictability.
