Your lovebird sounds adorable. I would love to have one if we didn't
already have a zoo. Do they grow out of the chewing stage? My cockatiels
haven't. In the den, and other places that they can get to, we have plastic
tubing on all of the electrical cords. Plus, in the bathroom, I've had to
remove some silk plants because the birds keep triming them. They love to
chew paper. and anything else that they know we don't want destroyed. We
keep a squirt gun in the rooms they normally go in to discourage them being
bad. They will mind when I tell them no, but when they think we're not
looking they'll go for it again. The squirt gun prompts them to leave what
they're into, at least for awhile. They are quite sneaky.
I thought that I had read that you could not keep parakets or parrots in
a cage with cockatiels, because they're too agressive (especially the
parakets), and can physically harm the tiels? Have you read anything about
this?
Yes, we have thought about building our own avairy, and my husband is
pretty good with things like that. But the problem is getting the right mesh
and things that would look nice and neat enough for the living room
(hopefully eventually family room). Plus, we have to be careful what it is
made of so they can't chew it to shreds. Plus, we want it to be large so
they can spend most to the day in it. Belive me we have looked at all of the
lumber yards and hardware stores, trying to find something that would work.
We thought about having one made out of rod iron, but it would be so heavy it
would be hard to deal with and hard to move around for cleaning, plus very
expensive. They're aren't many places that you can buy a nice looking,
large, avairy. In fact Corner's Unlimited was about the only company that we
found that had anything nice. I'm sure that there are other companies out
there, but can't find them. We also want something that has small service
doors, so if we have someone birdsit, they won't have to worry about them
getting out and having to chase them. If you know of any other companies
that might have something nice, I'd love to know. The one that we are
ordering at this point is going to cost us about $900.
My husband just had to have a new mother board, plus one of his hard drives
went out, and we charged them, so we want to get them paid for before we get
the avairy. Plus, we just got a new garage door six months same as cash.
Meanwhile, we have got all of the birds to sleep in one big cage at
night. They seem to do real well, and it saves a lot of cleaning. The cage
would be too small for them to be in all day, but since they just sleep in
it, there's plenty of room. Although the finches have not gone in their
nesting/sleeping boxes since we combined cages. But, we also haven't had any
eggs for awhile, thank goodness.
Well, I need to go do a bit of housecleaning before my husband gets home
from work. Bye for now.
