Exactly!  And Dolby ProLogic is VERY dependent on the phase of the
origional signal, as well as it's frequency response to properly decode
the appropriate channel information.  Most analoge cassette decks aren't
good enough to preserve this, and swapping tapes makes it useless. 
However, HiFi VCR's, from my experience are quite good.  If this
"maximizer" just adds ambience, then probably little degredation will
occure of the origional signal.  However, it the sound field is
"shifted" in ANY way, it'll foul up the ProLogic royaly.
