Well, folks. I just got my hands on JAR v.1.01, and made some tests with it.
But of course, one can't even come close to the compression tests made by
others ;-)
I decided to compress the latest FidoNet nodelist (NODELIST.299). Using JAR,
it took roughly 29 minutes on my 386SX/16, and the archive size was 983207
bytes (using maximum compression).
Then I checked with ARJ v.2.50. It took less than 4 minutes, and the archive
size was 984399. On the same machine.
Actually I don't think it's really worth waiting another 25 minutes to get a
saving of 1192 bytes ;-) Maybe there are some parameters that may need to be
optimized in JAR.CFG, but I doubt that it will even come close to good old
ARJ at this point.
Also, an interesting question is which letter to use for JAR archived
nodelists etc (like .A?? for ARCed files, .J?? for ARJed files etc). Any good
suggestions ?
