It can help to have an understanding of what is happening, what 'kill' does
etc. Although we're in the wrong room for that discussion.
Some time ago when I worked on BSD based Ultrix systems we used to slowly
accumulate processes that were killed yet refused to actually depart. The
only way out was a reboot.
