I find humour to be one of two best response types to put off too-nosy
people (friends are okay, of course, but when people presume too much
familiarity, I feel rather put-upon!)
1. Humour (always good, if you have a few pat answers that are
lighthearted, and not meanly intended)
examples I use:
"How did you become disabled, in a wheelchair?
ME: "I went to my bank in 1990 just to check my balance, and I fell off
the roof"
ME: "You know that freezebrain thing from drinking cold stuff too quick?
Well, I did that too often!"
2. Terseness (a flat simple answer when they were obviously seeking a
story tells a tale of "f--- off & leave me alone" but not so
aggressively!
examples I use:
"How did you become disabled, in a wheelchair?"
ME: "birth defect." (technically, yeah. . .)
ME: "leg don't work."
Not sure how to categorize the reply of, "I was advised not to talk
about it." (with a psychotic peer. . . heh)
Because I care,
